Gold, silver and cash worth Rs 1.25 crore seized at Chennai Central Railway Station

Railway Protection Force personnel seized gold, silver and cash worth about Rs 1.25 crore from passengers who allegedly failed to produce valid documents at Chennai Central Railway Station.

During routine surveillance at the station late Friday night, officials checked passengers arriving on the Lalbagh Express from Bengaluru at around 12.10 a.m.
During the inspection, they recovered four gold bars weighing 288 grams worth about Rs 47.52 lakh and a silver bar weighing 10 kg valued at Rs 29.40 lakh from a passenger.

As the person failed to produce proper documents for the valuables, the items were seized.
Investigation identified the passenger as Venkatesh from Kolar district in Karnataka.
In another incident around 1 p.m. on Friday, officials inspected passengers arriving on the Pinakini Express from Vijayawada and seized Rs 48.59 lakh in cash from a passenger who could not provide valid documents.

The passenger was identified as Karthik from Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh.
Railway police later handed over the seized gold, silver, cash and the two persons involved to the Income Tax Department for further investigation.
