A goods vehicle transporting eggs overturned near Ainampalayam on the Villupuram– Gingee Road on Wednesday morning, causing damage to eggs worth about Rs. 1 lakh and briefly disrupting traffic.
Gunasekaran, 40, a trader from Kedar near Villupuram, had purchased a bulk consignment of eggs from Namakkal and was transporting them to Villupuram in his own cargo vehicle.
The vehicle was being driven by Ramesh, 35, a resident of Kilperumbakkam in Villupuram district. According to police, the accident occurred at around 8.30 a.m. when the driver attempted to overtake a government bus near Ainampalayam.
In the process, he lost control of the vehicle, which skidded and overturned on the road.
Both Gunasekaran and the driver escaped with minor injuries.
However, nearly 20,000 eggs were broken in the mishap, resulting in losses estimated at Rs. 1 lakh.
Broken eggs were scattered across the road, while the unbroken eggs were later shifted to another vehicle.
Vehicular movement on the Villupuram–Gingee Road was affected for some time.
Villupuram taluk police rushed to the spot, removed the overturned vehicle and restored normal traffic flow.
