A government bus carrying passengers got stuck in a muddy pit near Saibaba Temple in Coimbatore after a road dug up for the SUEZ drinking water project was allegedly not properly restored.
SUEZ has been laying pipelines at several locations under the city’s 24-hour drinking water supply project. A portion of the road near Saibaba Temple was dug up several months ago for the work. Though the project work was completed, the excavated stretch was allegedly covered only with soil.
On Thursday, the front wheel of a government bus unexpectedly sank into the weakened portion, leaving the vehicle tilted to one side. Passengers were shocked, but the driver managed to prevent the bus from overturning. All passengers got down safely without injuries.
The incident caused traffic congestion in the area. Residents and motorists alleged that roads dug up for the project were not properly restored. They urged the Coimbatore Corporation and SUEZ officials to immediately repair the damaged stretch and prevent a major accident.
