Governor Arlekar approves 12 bills passed by Tamil Nadu Assembly

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has given his assent to 12 of the 13 Bills passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly during its 2026-27 Budget Session.
The Budget Session began on August 5 with the presentation of the full Budget for 2026-27, followed by the Agriculture Budget on August 6. Discussions on the Budget and department-wise demands for grants were held subsequently, with Ministers responding to the debates.
The session concluded on September 8, with 13 Bills passed on the final day.
Among the Bills passed was the Tamil Nadu Private Universities (Amendment) Bill, which seeks to reduce the minimum land requirement for establishing private universities from 100 acres to 12 acres in Chennai, 18 acres in other corporations and 25 acres in other areas.
The required permanent deposit has also been proposed to be reduced from Rs. 50 crore to Rs. 25 crore.
Other Bills included amendments relating to agricultural produce marketing, additional functions of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission, financial appropriation, Fire and Rescue Services, Panchayats, ease of doing business and Value Added Tax.
Of the 13 Bills, the Governor has assented to 12. These include the Town and Country Planning Bill, the Bill providing cars for MLAs and the Bill imposing Value Added Tax on Tasmac liquor, which had faced opposition from the AIADMK, PMK and CPI in the Assembly.
The Private Universities Bill has been reserved for the President’s consideration.
The 12 assented Bills have become laws and were published in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette dated September 15.
