Haryana’s sports community has been shaken by the brutal killing of national-level para-powerlifter Rohit Dhankar (28), who succumbed to injuries two days after being assaulted by a mob near Rewari Khera.
According to police, Rohit, a resident of Humayunpur village in Rohtak, attended a family wedding on November 27. During the event, he reportedly confronted a few members of the groom’s side over their indecent behaviour, resulting in a verbal clash.
As Rohit was returning home after the function, a mob allegedly blocked his car and launched a violent attack using hockey sticks, iron rods, and other weapons. He sustained multiple serious injuries and was rushed to Pandit B.D. Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak.
Despite intensive treatment, Rohit died two days later, triggering outrage across the state.
Police have detained several individuals linked to the assault and are conducting further investigations. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with calls for swift justice for the young para-athlete who represented Haryana at the national level.
