Water that inundated the Subramaniya Swamy Temple at Marudhamalai following heavy rain in Coimbatore began receding on Tuesday night and had drained completely by Wednesday morning, bringing relief to devotees. The northeast monsoon has intensified across Coimbatore district, with continuous rainfall over the past few days.
Heavy showers on Tuesday evening caused flooding in several areas, with rainwater entering houses in Periyanaickenpalayam, including the Five Junction and Vivekanandapuram Kuttai areas. A wall of a house belonging to Kala on Pattalammman Temple Street collapsed. Several two-wheeler riders slipped and sustained injuries on residential roads in Santhimedu, Veerapandi Pirivu, Selvapuram and Thirumalai Nayakkanpalayam.
Heavy rain in Goundampalayam, Gounder Mills Pirivu and Thudiyalur caused rainwater to flow like a river along the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam Road, slowing traffic. Intermittent showers continued through the night. A section of the compound wall at the Government Middle School in No. 24 Veerapandi also collapsed.
Trees and electricity poles fell at several locations, while houses in Maniyakaranpalayam and Nallampalayam were flooded. At Marudhamalai, rainwater entered the Subramaniya Swamy Temple, causing difficulties for devotees who had arrived for worship. After the rain eased, the water gradually receded overnight and the temple premises were completely cleared by Wednesday morning.
Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja inspected waterlogged areas in person. Corporation workers used motor pumps to drain the accumulated water.
