Hindustan College marks Bharathiyar Birth Anniversary with literary events

The 144th birth anniversary of Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar was celebrated in a special manner at Hindustan Arts and Science College, Padur, near Kelambakkam in Chengalpattu district. The programme was organised by the Department of Languages at the college’s Newton Hall.
The celebrations commenced with divine invocations and the Tamil Thaai Vazhthu. Head of the Department of Languages, Ma. Thenkarai Maharaja Pillai, welcomed the gathering. The Principal of the college, Dr. Uthira Tha., presided over the function.
In his presidential address, the Principal said that Bharathiyar’s poems remain close to the hearts of the people and continue to inspire generations. He noted that the timeless appeal of Bharathiyar’s works lies in their progressive thoughts and emotional depth, and urged students to read and imbibe Bharathiyar’s poetry to reach greater heights in life.
Academic Vice-Principal K. Malarvizhi, who delivered the felicitation address, highlighted that Bharathiyar’s poetic lines laid the foundation for women’s empowerment and social reform in Tamil society.
As part of the celebrations, a students’ poetry competition titled “Manathil Urudhi Vendum” (We Need Determination in Our Minds) was conducted earlier. More than 30 students participated and recited their poems. Certificates were distributed to the winners during the function.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by K. Kavitha, Assistant Professor, Department of Languages.
