A shocking incident unfolded in Vijayawada district yesterday when a man brutally murdered his wife in front of bystanders outside a private hospital.
Vijay (40), a technician at a private hospital in Bhavanipuram, had married Saraswathi (30), a nurse working at a private hospital in Nuzvid, in 2022 after a love affair. The couple has a two-year-old son.
Police said that Vijay had been frequently quarrelling with Saraswathi, allegedly due to suspicion over her activities. Due to repeated conflicts, Saraswathi had moved out of their home a few weeks ago and was living separately with her child.
Saraswathi, who usually reported to duty at 8 a.m., left the hospital after completing her shift yesterday afternoon. Vijay, who had been monitoring her movements for several days, was reportedly waiting outside the hospital armed with a knife.
When Saraswathi stepped out, Vijay confronted her, pushed her to the ground, and slashed her neck with the knife. As she screamed for help, onlookers attempted to intervene, but Vijay allegedly threatened them with the blood-stained knife, warning that he would attack anyone who approached. Within moments, Saraswathi succumbed to her injuries.
Shocked members of the public alerted the Suryaraopeta police, who rushed to the spot and detained Vijay with the help of local residents. Saraswathi’s body was sent to the Government Hospital for post-mortem.
Vijay has been arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
