A 24-year-old woman was hacked to death by her husband at a bus stand near Tirunelveli Junction on Monday following a dispute arising out of suspicion over her behaviour.
Police said Sudhakar (29) of Melapalamadai village near Thalaiyuthu had frequent quarrels with his wife Pechiyammal, who was working at a textile shop in Vannarpettai.
The couple, who have two children, had been living separately for the past two years after marital disputes.
On Monday morning, Pechiyammal travelled by a town bus from Palamadai to Tirunelveli Junction on her way to work. Sudhakar allegedly followed her in the same bus.
After she got down at the bus stand and was sitting in the shade while talking on her mobile phone, Sudhakar confronted her and an argument broke out between them.
In a fit of rage, he attacked her with a sickle, slashing her on the neck. Pechiyammal died on the spot due to severe bleeding. Sudhakar fled the scene but was later arrested by the police. Further investigation is under way.
