“I Can’t do SIR work anymore”: Gujarat teacher dies by suicide

A school teacher posted as a Booth Level Officer (BLO) for the Special Intensive Voter Correction (SIR) drive in Gujarat died by suicide, leaving behind a note blaming work-related stress. Arvind Vader, a teacher from Nevli village in Gir Somnath district, was found hanging in his house yesterday morning. In a letter addressed to his wife, he wrote that he was unable to continue his SIR duties and that the pressure had pushed him to a point where “there is no other option but death.” District Collector N. V. Upadhyay said an inquiry has been ordered into the incident. He described Arvind as a dedicated BLO who had already completed 40 per cent of the SIR work allotted to his polling station. The incident has intensified concerns over the heavy workload faced by BLOs. Similar suicides have been reported in states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, prompting calls for urgent reforms in voter-list correction duties and staff welfare measures.
