Two workers were killed in a powerful explosion that occurred while illegally manufacturing firecrackers near Sattur in Virudhunagar district on Friday.
The blast took place at an agricultural land in K Mettupatti village, where firecrackers were being made unlawfully in a shed owned by Saravana Kumar.
Police said the explosion was so intense that both workers at the site died on the spot.
The deceased have been identified as Shakil Hussain and Shafiqul Ali, migrant workers from northern India, who were engaged in firecracker production at the time of the
incident.
On receiving information, police and fire and rescue personnel rushed to the spot and carried out recovery operations.
The bodies were sent to the government hospital for post-mortem examination. Preliminary inquiries revealed that firecrackers were being manufactured without permission and in violation of safety norms.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident, including the role of the landowner and others involved in the illegal activity.
The tragedy has once again raised serious concerns over recurring fatal accidents linked to illegal firecracker units in Virudhunagar district, which remains a hub for fireworks manufacturing despite repeated warnings and enforcement drives by authorities.
