An imam in Assam’s Sribhumi district (formerly Karimganj) has been widely praised after he helped rescue seven people trapped in a sinking vehicle by alerting villagers through a mosque loudspeaker.
The incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday near Neelam Bazar when a vehicle travelling along the national highway skidded off the road and plunged into a pond.
With the windows shut, the vehicle began sinking rapidly, leaving the passengers trapped inside.
Hearing the sound of the crash, Imam Abdul Basit of the nearby Neelam Bazar Mosque rushed out and quickly used the mosque loudspeaker to alert villagers.
Responding within minutes, locals ran to the spot, jumped into the pond and rescued all seven passengers alive.
Imam Abdul Basit’s swift action has drawn praise from various quarters.
A local BJP leader visited him to commend his bravery, and police officials said they would recommend him for formal recognition.
The rescued passengers, all from the Hindu community, were travelling from Silchar in Assam to Tripura at the time of the accident.
