Injured female elephant found dead in Sirumugai forest

A female elephant that had sustained an injury after an iron rod became entangled around its left foreleg was found dead in the Sirumugai forest range on Tuesday.
The elephant was first spotted on September 2 in the Uliyoor beat of the Pethikuttai section. After the injury was identified, a forest veterinary medical team provided treatment to the elephant on September 6. As the elephant was found to have an infection, forest veterinary doctors advised forest staff to continue monitoring its health. Teams of forest personnel were formed and medicines were administered by mixing them with fruits. ORS and glucose were also given in water to prevent dehydration. During routine monitoring on the morning of September 13, the treated elephant was not found in the area. The information was immediately conveyed to the District Forest Officer, Coimbatore Forest Division.
Following instructions from the District Forest Officer, forest personnel began searching for the elephant from September 14. During a renewed search on September 15, the elephant was found dead inside a bush-covered area at a place called Thamaraipalli.
The forest department was informed about the death. Following the instructions of the District Forest Officer, arrangements have been made to conduct a post-mortem examination on September 16 to determine the cause of death.
