A 19-year-old woman from Bagalkot in Karnataka died by suicide after her relationship with a from another religion was opposed by her family, police said.
The deceased, Bhumika, was working at a tyre shop in Bagalkot.
She had developed a relationship with Dongrisab, an autorickshaw driver from the same locality. Their acquaintance later turned into a love affair
According to police, the couple belonged to different religions, and the relationship was strongly opposed by Bhumika’s parents.
Despite repeated objections, she continued to remain in contact with the and expressed her desire to marry him.
Police said Bhumika was distressed over her parents’ refusal to accept the relationship.
Taking advantage of being alone at home, she allegedly died by suicide by hanging.
On returning home, her parents found her hanging and immediately alerted the Bagalkot police.
The body was recovered and sent for post-mortem examination.
A case has been registered and further investigation is under way. The incident has caused shock and grief in the locality.
