A 23-year-old Jallikattu athlete was chased and brutally hacked to death by a gang near a government school in Pudukkottai district on Monday morning, in a murder believed to be the result of long-standing enmity linked to Jallikattu bull trading and rearing.
The victim was identified as Inparasan, son of Jaishankar, a resident of Veppangudi village in Pudukkottai district.
Police said Inparasan was actively involved in Jallikattu events and was engaged in rearing and training bulls used for the traditional sport.
He reportedly had a history of rivalry with Vignesh, also from Veppangudi, over disputes related to the purchase and sale of Jallikattu bulls, training practices and ownership issues.
According to police, Inparasan had gone out on Sunday to purchase bulls and returned home late in the night.
On Monday morning, after informing his parents that he was heading to work, he left home. While walking near the Government School at Alagambalpuram, he was intercepted by a gang lying in wait.
The assailants were armed with knives and sickles concealed on their persons.
Sensing danger, Inparasan attempted to escape and ran from the spot. However, the gang chased him down. During the chase, he stumbled and fell.
Taking advantage of the situation, the assailants attacked him indiscriminately, severing both his hands and inflicting multiple cut injuries on various parts of his body.
He collapsed in a pool of blood, after which the attackers fled the scene.
Passersby rushed to his aid and alerted emergency services. Inparasan was taken in a 108 ambulance to the Pudukkottai Government Medical College Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way.
On receiving information, Vallathirakkottai police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. Inspector Nalini conducted an inspection at the scene. Police said seven persons, including Vignesh, are suspected to be involved.
A case has been registered, and special teams have been formed to nab the accused.
