In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Tamil Nadu, an insurance scheme for Jallikattu bulls is set to be introduced shortly. With Jallikattu events held across the State during the Pongal festival, the move is expected to bring relief to bull owners who invest significant resources in rearing and training the animals throughout the year.
So far, while dairy cows and buffaloes have been covered under livestock insurance schemes, Jallikattu bulls did not enjoy such protection. In this backdrop, the United India Insurance Company has reportedly come forward to extend insurance coverage to Jallikattu bulls as well. However, official confirmation from the company’s headquarters is yet to be independently verified.
Speaking in this regard, N.K. Puthan, said to be a consultant and veterinarian associated with the insurance company, stated that Jallikattu bulls would be included under livestock insurance by assessing their market value. Normally, insured cattle are identified using ear tags. However, since Jallikattu bulls take part in competitive events, ear tags are considered impractical. As an alternative, a new technology based on scanning the unique patterns on the bulls’ nose lines will reportedly be used for identification, he said.
The insurance cover will initially be provided for one year, similar to existing livestock insurance schemes. In the event of the bull’s death due to any reason, compensation equivalent to the assessed market value will be credited directly to the owner’s bank account without intermediaries. If no claim is made in the first year, the insurance may be extended in subsequent years for periods ranging from three to ten years.
It was further stated that bulls generally begin participating in Jallikattu only after completing three years of age, and hence insurance coverage would commence from that age. For a bull valued at around Rs 1 lakh, the annual premium is expected to be up to Rs 6,000.
As of now, detailed operational guidelines and formal government or corporate announcements on the scheme are awaited.
