Election Flying Squad officials seized gold, diamond and silver jewellery worth nearly Rs.13 crore during separate vehicle checks in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts.
In Coimbatore, a flying squad led by officer Saminathan intercepted a van on CODISSIA Road near Avinashi Road.
Upon inspection, officials found around 6 kg of gold and diamond jewellery and 8.47 kg of silver articles.
The total value of the seized items was estimated at Rs.10.18 crore. As the consignment lacked valid supporting documents, it was confiscated and later handed over to the treasury near the Coimbatore South Taluk Office after informing election authorities.
In a similar operation in Tiruppur district, officials conducted checks on the Palladam–Chettipalayam road. A van travelling from Coimbatore to Tiruppur was stopped and searched, revealing 15 boxes containing gold, diamond and silver jewellery valued at Rs.2.75 crore. The driver claimed that the items were being transported for delivery to a jewellery shop in Tiruppur. However, due to inadequate documentation, the consignment was seized and handed over to the election officer Saravanan for further action. Authorities said intensified vehicle checks are being carried out across the region to curb the movement of unaccounted valuables during the election
period.
