Karaikal Fisherman Nets 50 Rare Sea Gold Fish Worth Lakhs

Fortune smiled on a Karaikal fisherman who hauled in an extraordinary catch of over 50 rare ‘Sea Gold’ fish, fetching bids worth several lakhs of rupees soon after fishing resumed following the cyclone ban.
After remaining ashore for eight days due to storm warnings, fishermen from Karaikal ventured back into the Bay of Bengal on October 29.
While most returned with modest catches, one fisherman’s net yielded an astonishing bounty — dozens of Sea Gold fish, a prized species known for its medicinal value and high market demand. Each kilogram of Sea Gold fish sells for more than ₹1,000, making it one of the most valuable marine species along the coast.
When the catch was brought ashore, traders at the Karaikal port rushed to outbid each other, pushing the total value into lakhs.
Witnesses said over 200 boats had gone fishing that day, but only this fisherman’s net held the coveted species — a rare and lucky occurrence that stunned both locals and traders. Fisheries officials said such catches are rare and reflect favorable sea conditions following the recent cyclone, bringing renewed hope and prosperity to the fishing community.
