Amritapuri (Kollam), Sept. 26: The Kerala Government today paid a grand tribute to spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi Devi during the silver jubilee of her historic Malayalam address at the United Nations General Assembly. The felicitation, part of Amritavarsham 72—Amma’s 72nd birthday celebrations—was held at the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham campus in Amritapuri.
State Minister for Culture and Youth Affairs Saji Cherian presented the honor on behalf of the government. Speaking on the occasion, he said, “Amma has showcased the strength of Malayalam language and culture before the entire world. Her use of Malayalam at the UN was not just symbolic but a powerful reminder to those who neglect their mother tongue. This honor is a cultural awakening, and the Chief Minister also extends his greetings and respects.” His words drew loud applause from the thousands present.
In her response, Amma dedicated the recognition to the Malayalam language. “This award belongs to Malayalam, which gives us identity and form. Parents must inspire their children to preserve and take pride in their mother tongue,” she urged.
Karunagappally MLA C.R. Mahesh described Amritapuri as a global meeting ground, while Thrikkakara MLA Ummā Thomas said Amma’s words in Malayalam at the UN continue to remind society of love and brotherhood.
Several dignitaries offered floral tributes, including BJP State Vice President Dr. K.S. Radhakrishnan, IG Lakshman Gugguloth, Kerala Law Academy Director Adv. Nagaraj Narayanan, actor Devan, and Marunadan Malayali Chief Editor Shajan Skaria.
The event was presided over by Swami Amritaswarupananda Puri, Vice Chairman of Mata Amritanandamayi Math, who delivered the welcome address. Swamini Suvidyamrita Prana proposed the vote of thanks.
