Kerala tribunal awards Rs 1.15 Crore compensation to family of girl in coma

The family of a nine-year-old girl who has remained in a coma for over a year following a tragic hit-and-run accident in Vadakara has been awarded Rs 1.15 crore as compensation by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT).
The incident occurred in February last year when a speeding car struck Baby (68) and her granddaughter Trishana (9) as they were crossing the road in the Sorod area. Baby died on the spot, while the girl suffered severe head injuries and has since been under continuous treatment in a hospital.
Shockingly, the car involved in the accident fled the scene and was traced only 10 months later. Although the chargesheet in the case was filed seven months ago, the child’s family had not received any insurance compensation until now.
Taking note of the prolonged delay and the girl’s critical condition, the Kerala High Court directed authorities to expedite the matter. Following this, the MACT conducted an inquiry and ordered the National Insurance Company to pay Rs 1.15 crore to the victim’s family.
The tribunal further instructed that the compensation amount be deposited in the girl’s bank account, allowing Rs 25 lakh to be withdrawn immediately for her ongoing medical treatment.
