Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) has achieved a significant milestone in cardiac care by successfully completing its 50th Cryoablation procedure for treating Atrial Fibrillation (AF), a common heart rhythm disorder.
With this achievement, KMCH has joined a select group of only five hospitals across the country to reach this landmark. It is also the only hospital in Tamil Nadu outside Chennai to offer and accomplish this level of success using Cryoablation technology.
Atrial Fibrillation is a major health concern, particularly among the elderly, affecting nearly 10 per cent of individuals in their 80s.
If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as blood clots and increase the risk of ischemic stroke by three to five times.
Cryoablation, a minimally invasive procedure, involves inserting a cryoballoon through a small incision in the groin and guiding it to the left atrium of the heart.
The balloon is then inflated at the pulmonary vein opening, where cold energy is applied to freeze targeted tissue, creating scars that block abnormal electrical signals and restore normal heart rhythm.
The hospital’s Centre of Excellence for Atrial Fibrillation provides comprehensive care, including personalised treatment plans addressing conditions such as hypertension, obesity and sleep apnea.
It also offers remote monitoring through mobile applications and wearable devices, along with telemedicine services to ensure continuous care for patients beyond Coimbatore.
Chairman and Managing Director Nalla G. Palaniswami said the milestone reflects KMCH’s commitment to delivering world-class healthcare since its inception in 1990. Executive Director Arun Palaniswami commended interventional cardiologist Lawrance Jesuraj and the multidisciplinary team, noting that the achievement represents improved quality of life for 50 patients through advanced, minimally invasive treatment.
Lawrance Jesuraj described Cryoablation as a safe and effective procedure that helps restore the heart’s natural rhythm by eliminating irregular electrical signals.
