KMCH launches Tamil Nadu’s first AI-powered ETHOS Radiation therapy

Kovai Medical Center and Hospital has strengthened its position in advanced cancer care with the launch of the Varian ETHOS Adaptive Radiation Therapy system, becoming the first hospital in Tamil Nadu to introduce the AI-powered technology.
The launch is part of a major investment of Rs 70 crore in state-of-the-art medical infrastructure. The expansion also includes the commissioning of the Symbia Pro SPECT CT system and a new MRI scan facility, reinforcing KMCH’s commitment to comprehensive, world-class diagnostics and treatment.
The new facilities were inaugurated on January 2 by Dr Nalla G Palaniswami, Chairman and Managing Director of KMCH. Speaking at the event, he said the introduction of the ETHOS system reflects KMCH’s continued leadership in delivering cutting-edge oncology care.
Dr Arun Palaniswami, Executive Director of KMCH, and Dr R Subramaniam, Chief of Radiation Oncology, said the AI-driven ETHOS technology allows radiation treatment plans to be adapted in real time based on daily imaging. This ensures precise targeting of tumours while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
The ETHOS system uses high-resolution 3D cone beam CT imaging before every session and re-optimises radiation delivery using artificial intelligence. This results in reduced side effects, faster recovery and improved quality of life for patients. Treatment sessions are also streamlined, typically lasting only 15 to 20 minutes.
The technology is expected to significantly benefit patients with prostate cancer, brain tumours, head and neck cancers and thoracic malignancies.
With this latest investment, the KMCH Comprehensive Cancer Center has further consolidated its status as the most technologically advanced provider of complete cancer care in Western Tamil Nadu.
