Heavy rains in the Western Ghats have led to a flood surge at Kovai Courtallam waterfall, prompting the Forest Department to temporarily close the eco-tourism site from today, September 25, in view of tourist safety. Kovai Courtallam is one of Coimbatore’s major natural tourist attractions. Located amid the dense forest of the Siruvani hill ranges, the waterfall is around 35 km from Coimbatore city. Water flow at the waterfall increases during the monsoon, attracting tourists to the surrounding green forest, cool surroundings and natural trails. Tourist facilities, including tree cottages, are also available in the area. As the waterfall comes under the control of the Forest Department, visitors are allowed access only with permission. Tourists are normally taken from the entry point to the waterfall area in Forest Department vehicles. In view of the prevailing flood situation, Kovai Courtallam has been temporarily closed from today. The public has been advised not to visit the area until further notice.
