A special court in Coimbatore has sentenced two persons to life imprisonment in a case involving caste-based abuse and attempt to murder.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on August 23, 2019, at Kottur near Anaimalai. Patteswaran, a coconut worker, had questioned two youths who were standing near his house late at night, leading to an argument. Though they left the spot, the duo returned the following night and picked up a quarrel again.
During the altercation, they allegedly abused Patteswaran by using his caste name and attacked him with an iron rod, causing serious injuries to his head and hands.
He was rescued by family members and admitted to the Pollachi Government Hospital, where he underwent treatment before being discharged after five days.
Based on a complaint, Kottur police registered a case under relevant sections, including provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and attempt to murder, and arrested Chandrakumar and Muralitharan, both residents of Kotturpuram.
The case was tried before the SC/ST Special Court in Coimbatore.
Delivering the verdict, Judge Vivekanandhan found the accused guilty and sentenced both Chandrakumar and Muralitharan to life imprisonment.
The prosecution was led by Special Public Prosecutor Balasubramanian.
