Low pressure area over bay of Bengal strengthens, says IMD

The India Meteorological Department has reported that the low pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal has intensified and is likely to strengthen further in the coming hours.
According to the India Meteorological Department, a deep depression has developed over the South Bay of Bengal and is expected to move west-northwestwards towards the southwest Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours. The weather pattern over Tamil Nadu, which has been experiencing severe cold conditions over the past few weeks, is now showing signs of change. Morning fog was reported in several places, but the evolving system indicates the possibility of rainfall in the coming days. The Meteorological Department said a low-level circulation has formed over the southeast Arabian Sea off the south Kerala coast. In addition, an upper-level circulation is present over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas. Separate low-level circulations have also developed over the Maldives and Lakshadweep regions.
Due to these combined systems, an upper-level circulation has formed over the central part of the South Bay of Bengal along the equatorial region, leading to the formation of the low-pressure area. The department said the system is likely to intensify further into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, dry weather is likely to prevail over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal today. Light fog may be observed at one or two places during the early morning hours, the department added.
