A male wild elephant died following a violent clash with another elephant near the Pillur Dam area close to Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district. Forest sources said herds of wild elephants frequently move through the Billur–Pillur forest stretch.
On Sunday night, two adult male elephants reportedly engaged in a fierce fight while a herd was moving towards the Pillur Dam region.
During the clash, one of the elephants sustained severe injuries to its neck, trunk, legs and abdomen. Unable to withstand the attack, the injured elephant collapsed and died on the
spot.
The carcass was spotted by members of the public on Monday morning, who alerted the Forest Department and local police. Forest officials rushed to the scene and initiated procedures for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. Further inquiry is under way.
