Jose Charles Martin, son of lottery businessman Martin, on Sunday launched a new political party, the Latchiya Jananayaka Katchi, declaring that his entry into politics was aimed at solving people’s problems and not making money.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Jose Charles Martin said allegations that he had entered politics for financial gain were
baseless.
He asserted that he had no need to enter public life for money and had stepped in only after witnessing the hardships faced by the people of Puducherry.
Earlier in the day, he offered prayers at the Manakula Vinayagar Temple, Janmarakini Annai Temple and the Syed Ahmed Maula Sahib Dargah.
He later proceeded to the Puducherry harbour, where he went out to sea by boat and formally unveiled the party flag.
As part of the launch, 64 boats lined up in formation in the sea.
The party flag, featuring blue, white and red colours with a lion symbol, six stars and a crescent bearing the party initials, was introduced during the
ceremony.
Addressing supporters at a public meeting held at Puducherry Marina Beach, Jose Charles Martin highlighted what he termed as the failure of successive governments to address basic civic issues.
He alleged that sewage mixing with drinking water had led to deaths, government primary health centres lacked doctors, and corruption was prevalent in medicine procurement.
He also alleged an unspoken understanding between the ruling party and the opposition, resulting in a lack of accountability.
The Latchiya Jananayaka Katchi, he said, would act as the voice of the people and work towards corruption-free governance.
Stating that his vision was to transform Puducherry into a global model, he said the Union Territory should aspire to standards seen in countries such as Singapore, Denmark and
Ireland.
“If we do not act now, Puducherry will fall further behind in the next five years,” he said.
Independent MLAs Angalaan and Sivashankar, along with several other political figures including Reagan, son of Minister Jankumar, participated in the event.
