Measures to fulfill the drinking water needs of wildlife

In an effort to fulfill the drinking water requirements of wild animals during the summer season, the Erode District Forest Department has undertaken various initiatives.
Speaking on this matter, Mr. K.V. Appala Naidu, District Forest Officer of the Erode Forest Division, stated: “Forests and wildlife are invaluable natural assets.
The Tamil Nadu Forest Department is actively engaged in management and conservation efforts to ensure that these resources are preserved for future generations.”
“With regard to Erode District, it stands as a region of immense diversity—encompassing the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, the Vellode Bird Sanctuary, and various Reserve Forests—and plays a pivotal role in the conservation of the state’s biodiversity.”
“As the summer season has now commenced in the district, work has been undertaken to construct percolation ponds as well as small and medium-sized check dams within forest areas, with the specific aim of meeting the drinking water needs of the wildlife.
In key forest zones, dedicated water tanks have been installed and are being replenished using solar-powered electric pumps. Furthermore, in areas experiencing severe drought conditions, water is being transported via vehicles to fill these tanks.”
“Additionally, intensive efforts are underway to remove invasive alien weed species, thereby enhancing the food availability for wildlife. Consequently, the likelihood of wild animals venturing out of the forest in search of food and water will be significantly reduced.
Special teams have been constituted on a range-wise basis to conduct regular patrol duties.
Utilizing state-of-the-art technology, the movements of wildlife are being monitored during the night to ensure that they remain within the confines of the forest,” he added.
