Minister Vanni Arasu inaugurates palm seed planting

Tamil Nadu Minister for Social Justice Vanni Arasu inaugurated palm seed planting work on the bund of Arumugamangalam lake in Thoothukudi district as part of the one crore palm seed planting
project undertaken by Mother Social Service Trust and the Tamil Nadu Palm Tree Protection and
Workers Development Movement.
The initiative aims to protect water bodies, prevent soil erosion and promote the conservation of palm trees. Mother Social Service Trust has been undertaking the one crore palm seed planting project since 2019, with planting activities carried out along lake and river
bunds, canals, beaches, roadsides and government wastelands.
The event was presided over by Dr. S. J. Kennedy, Director of Mother Social Service Trust, State President of the Tamil Nadu Palm Tree Protection and Workers Development Movement and member of the District Green Committee.
In his address, Vanni Arasu highlighted the close cultural relationship between the palm tree and Tamil society. He said palm leaves had historically been used to preserve important works, including Thirukkural and Tholkappiyam, and stressed the ecological benefits of palm trees in protecting soil and water resources.
Vanni Arasu appreciated Dr. S. J. Kennedy and the organisations involved in the project, describing the initiative as an effort to conserve the palm tree
and revive Tamil cultural heritage.
The event was attended by VCK functionaries, members of the palm tree protection movement, Mother Social Service Trust staff, women’s self-help group members and local residents.
