The public urged Perundurai MLA S. Jayakumar to bring surplus water from the lower Bhavani canal, which is located one kilometer away, to the 4 ponds that are dry in the Kotaiyan Karukkuthottam area of the Perundurai assembly constituency in Erode district.
If this project is implemented from his MLA funds, it will take several months for getting government order and other procedures.
Therefore, without waiting for government funds, the farmers laid pipes for a distance of one kilometer and installed an electric motor at their own expense. In this situation, water came to the pond on Monday through a test run. But the Public Works Department officials came to remove the pipes and motors, saying that it was built without permission.
They did not take action due to the farmers’ protest. In this regard, Perundurai MLA Jayakumar submitted a petition to the Collector stating that the farmers had already applied to the government regarding this project.
They implemented this project with their own funds to alleviate the water shortage. But the government officials’ action against them is condemnable, he said. After the term of the Gram Panchayat presidents in his constituency ended, the drinking water problem is serious in all 29 panchayats. He requested that action be taken on this as well.
