Modi’s watch featuring 1947 one-Rupee coin goes viral on social media

A video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi wearing a wristwatch that features a 1947 one-rupee coin as its dial has taken social media by storm, sparking widespread curiosity and admiration.
Known not only for his political stature but also for his distinct fashion sense, Modi often makes headlines for his style choices — from the vibrant turbans he wears at the Red Fort on Independence Day to his signature traditional attire. This time, it is his rare coin-dial watch that has captured public attention.
The watch’s face is crafted from an original 1947 one-rupee coin, considered historically significant as it was one of the last coins minted under British rule. The coin, minted only between late 1946 and 1947, bears the image of a tiger — a symbol that many online users have linked to India’s journey to independence and the spirit of the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Manufactured by a Jaipur-based company, the Roman numeral watch is priced between
Rs 55,000 and Rs 60,000 and features a 43 mm stainless-steel body.
Reacting to the viral video, the company’s founder Gaurav Mehta expressed pride, saying, “It is a great joy to see Prime Minister Modi wearing a watch from our company at a time when Swadeshi sentiment is on the rise.” The video continues to circulate rapidly online, with many praising the symbolic and aesthetic choice of the Prime Minister’s accessory.
