A 29-year-old woman and her two children died after she allegedly pushed them into a well and jumped in, near Padappai on Friday, with police citing debt distress as the suspected cause.
Shamsia, a resident of Vallalar Nagar in Madambakkam, had been facing financial difficulties following the death of her husband Asif, who died by suicide last year. Their children, Asifa, 10, and Apsar, 5, were staying with relatives in Kolathur and visiting their mother on weekends.
Police said the children had come home the previous night. On Friday morning, Shamsia allegedly took them to an agricultural well, pushed them in, and jumped in after them.
Passersby alerted authorities, and police and fire personnel recovered the bodies. A note recovered from Shamsia indicated debt-related distress. Police are investigating further.
