Dr. Sharon Samson, an educationist, social worker and Assistant Professor in the Department of English, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Business Studies, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, has been honoured with the Mother Teresa Award for Community Service for her contributions to community welfare, education and social empowerment.
The award was presented to Dr. Sharon Samson at Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal, on September 3, 2026. She received the honour from M. Christopher Tilak, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, in the presence of M. K. Meera, award-winning Malayalam writer; Prof. Dr. Jayanthasri Balakrishnan, educationist, poet and translator; and Prof. Dr. Mahendran Maniam, Associate Professor, INTI International University, Malaysia.
The award recognised Dr. Samson’s sustained commitment to serving women, youth and underserved communities through her involvement in the YWCA, community outreach initiatives, educational programmes, health-awareness activities and efforts towards social empowerment and inclusive development.
Dr. Samson also serves as a National Board Member of the South East Region YWCA of India, contributing to initiatives focused on strengthening communities, empowering young people and women, and promoting inclusive social development.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Samson expressed gratitude for the recognition and dedicated the honour to the communities, colleagues, students, volunteers and organisations with whom she has worked. She said community service was not merely an act of giving but a sustained commitment to creating opportunities, dignity and hope for underserved sections.
The recognition marks another milestone in Dr. Samson’s journey as an educationist, social worker and community leader, combining her academic vocation with her commitment to social responsibility.
