Name Deleted From Voter List 82-Year-Old Dies By Suicide

An 82-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after his name was removed from the electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision of the voter list in West Bengal, triggering political controversy and prompting fresh directions from the Election Commission.
The deceased has been identified as Durjan Majhi, a resident of Purulia district belonging to the Santhal tribal community.
Police said Majhi died on Monday after jumping in front of a moving train.
The incident comes in the backdrop of the recent draft voter list revision in West Bengal, during which nearly 58 lakh names were reportedly deleted.
According to family members, Majhi’s name was missing from the latest voter list despite him being a registered voter since 2002.
Born in 1943, he had regularly exercised his franchise for decades.
After his name was excluded, Majhi reportedly received a notice asking him to appear for verification.
His son said the elderly man was under severe mental distress due to the lack of transport facilities to attend the hearing and fears that he might lose his citizenship status and voting
rights.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the incident, alleging that the Special Intensive Revision process was causing hardship to poor and marginalised sections.
She claimed that nearly 60 people had died due to stress linked to the exercise.
Following the incident, the Election Commission issued fresh instructions stating that elderly persons, the disabled and the seriously ill should not be summoned for in-person verification.
Officials said alternative verification methods would be adopted to prevent further distress.
The incident has sparked widespread concern over the impact of voter list revisions on vulnerable communities.
