Housing, Prohibition and Excise Minister S. Muthusamy conducted a study on the use of surplus water of Cauvery river from the watershed of Mettur dam at Settipatti Parisalthurai, Salem district.
He said:
Preliminary study work is currently being carried out on the project to pump water from the right bank reservoir of Mettur dam to dry ponds and ponds in Anthiyur and Bhavani taluks of Erode district and Salem district Kolathur union through pipelines.
It has been developed with the aim of providing water to 31 water bodies in a total of 24 villages including 19 villages in Anthiyur and Bhavani taluks and 5 villages in Kolathur union of Mettur taluk of Salem
district.
The total water requirement for this project is estimated to be 550.206 million cubic feet. The amount of water required for this project is 250 cusecs of surplus water of the Cauvery river from the right bank water reservoir of Mettur dam near Kolathur. The ponds will be filled by pumping water for about 26 days through
60 km long main pipes and 250 km long branch pipes. About 3931.56 acres of land will be directly benefited through this project. 14051 acres of land will be indirectly benefited.
Through this project, groundwater will be enriched and the drinking water needs of the people will be met and the livelihood of the farmers will be improved and their socio-economic status will also improve. He said that the work of preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for this project will be prepared to obtain funds from the government for the land survey and leveling works.
