Nirmala College for Women marked its 74th Annual Sports Day on Monday with vibrant enthusiasm, reaffirming its rich sporting legacy and commitment to holistic education.
The event concluded a week-long series of competitions for students, teaching and non-teaching staff, highlighting teamwork, inclusivity and athletic excellence across the campus.
The celebrations were graced by Lt. Col. Sumathi of the Army Medical Corps as Chief Guest and Rtn. Dr. Suman C.P.S., Orthopaedic Surgeon at VGM Hospital, as Guest of Honour. Lt. Col. Sumathi, an alumna of the institution, recalled her formative years at the college and credited its discipline and values for shaping her professional journey in the Armed Forces.
She urged students to pursue academics and extracurricular activities with dedication and perseverance.
Dr. Suman C.P.S. emphasised the importance of physical fitness, discipline and determination in achieving success in both sports and life.
The event was also attended by the Secretary, Dr. Sr. Kulandai Therese, and the Principal, Dr. Sr. Mary Fabiola, who lauded the participants and reiterated the institution’s commitment to promoting a strong sporting culture.
The day featured an impressive march past by student contingents, an energetic aerobics display and a vibrant band performance.
Track events, including relays, generated excitement among participants and spectators. Special attractions such as the Lucky Corner event and a 20-metre dash for children added colour to the programme.
A well-coordinated pyramid formation by students drew widespread appreciation for its precision and teamwork.
The college also honoured its coaches for their dedicated service in nurturing athletic talent and guiding students to competitive success.
The celebrations concluded with a prize distribution ceremony recognising athletes who excelled at international, national and state-level championships in disciplines including weightlifting, football, athletics, kho-kho, volleyball and taekwondo.
The 74th Annual Sports Day ended on a note of pride and achievement, underscoring Nirmala College for Women’s enduring commitment to discipline, excellence and the spirit of sportsmanship.
