Norway chess champion Praggnanandhaa meets Chief Minister Vijay

Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa on Monday met Chief Minister Vijay at the Secretariat in Chennai and received his congratulations for winning the prestigious Norway Chess Tournament.

The Norway Chess Tournament was held from May 25 to June 5 and featured some of the world’s leading players, including D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, Magnus Carlsen and Vincent Keymer.

Praggnanandhaa created history by becoming the first Indian player to win the prestigious Norway Chess title. He secured the championship after defeating Germany’s Vincent Keymer in the final round and finishing at the top of the standings.

Following his remarkable achievement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Vijay were among the prominent leaders who congratulated the young chess star.

The Chennai-born Grandmaster also earned widespread praise during the tournament for defeating world No.1 Magnus Carlsen twice, a feat that significantly boosted his title-winning campaign.

During the meeting at the Secretariat, Chief Minister Vijay lauded Praggnanandhaa for bringing pride to Tamil Nadu and India through his outstanding performance on the international stage.

Praggnanandhaa’s latest triumph is being hailed as another milestone for Indian chess, further strengthening the country’s growing reputation in the sport.
