Food Safety Department officials have issued notices to 11 fast-food outlets in Erode Corporation limits following an inspection that reportedly found unhygienic food preparation practices, use of monosodium glutamate (MSG) without mandatory warning labels, excessive use of synthetic food colours and use of banned plastic bags for packing food.
Acting on complaints, Designated Officer Dr. Varalakshmi directed corporation food safety officers Muthukrishnan, Kesavaraj and Selvan to inspect fast-food outlets across the city. During the inspection, officials said they found kitchens maintained in an unhygienic condition in some establishments. They also alleged that MSG was used without the prescribed warning, synthetic colours were used beyond permissible limits, and prohibited plastic bags were used to pack food.
Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, notices have been issued to the 11 outlets. Recommendations have been sent to the Designated Officer for further action, including imposition of penalties based on the nature of the violations.
The Act provides for penalties for unsafe food, with punishment varying according to whether the violation causes injury or death.
Food business operators have been directed to maintain kitchens and food-preparation areas hygienically, use only permitted additives within prescribed limits, avoid banned plastic bags and comply with food-safety norms.
The Food Safety Department has asked consumers to report complaints relating to food quality, hygiene and safety through its WhatsApp helpline, +91 94440 42322.
