A tattoo of Lord Murugan bearing the words “Om Saravanabhava” on the arm of a South African cricketer has gone viral on social media, attracting wide attention from cricket fans and the Tamil community.
The cricketer, Brandon Subramaniam, is currently representing the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 cricket league. The franchise, which is the South African counterpart of the Chennai Super Kings, shared a video featuring the player on its official Instagram page.
The video, posted with the caption “Muthu Murugan Dhuan”, highlights Subramaniam’s Murugan tattoo along with the Tamil devotional phrase “Om Saravanabhava” engraved on his arm. The visuals have since been widely circulated online.
Subramaniam’s family traces its roots to Tamil Nadu and is presently settled in South Africa. The 32-year-old all-rounder had earlier delivered notable performances for South Africa in the Under-19 World Cup.
Notably, the South African cricket team already includes players of Tamil origin such as Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy, reflecting the growing presence of the Tamil diaspora in the country’s cricketing scene.
