One person was killed and more than 10 passengers sustained injuries after an omni bus overturned on the Chennai–Trichy National Highway near Ulundurpet in Kallakurichi district in the early hours of Thursday.
The bus, which was travelling from Chennai to Salem, met with the accident near Badur when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The bus rammed into the centre median and overturned in the middle of the road due to the impact.
As the mishap occurred around midnight, several passengers were asleep and were jolted awake by the sudden crash. Hearing cries for help from injured passengers, passing motorists alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations.
In the accident, Ziauddin, 25, a resident of Mohanur in Namakkal district, died on the spot. More than 10 passengers who sustained serious injuries were rushed to a nearby government hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
The overturned bus caused heavy traffic congestion on the Chennai–Trichy National Highway, with vehicles queued for nearly three kilometres on both sides. Traffic was restored after the bus was removed from the road using a crane.
