Preparations are in full swing at the Government Botanical Garden in Ooty for the upcoming annual flower show, the highlight of the Nilgiris summer festival.
Every year, lakhs of tourists visit the Nilgiris district during April and May to enjoy the hill station’s pleasant climate and scenic attractions. With the onset of summer holidays this year, tourist inflow has already increased, with visitors arriving from across Tamil Nadu as well as neighbouring States including Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. To attract tourists, the district administration conducts a series of exhibitions as part of the summer festival, including flower, rose, fruit and perfume shows. Among these, the flower exhibition at the Government Botanical Garden remains the most popular attraction.
Officials said more than 40,000 flower pots have been arranged for the show, featuring vibrant blooms such as marigold, pansy, begonia, salvia, daisy and dahlia. These flowers are being nurtured and will be artistically displayed in specially designed exhibition spaces.
Work is under way to set up decorative flower pavilions, enhance landscaping and lay tiles within the park. In addition, the pond at the entrance is being converted into an artificial fountain, while the India map-shaped garden and steps are also being renovated. Horticulture officials expressed confidence that this year’s flower show will surpass previous editions, with extensive arrangements aimed at offering an enhanced experience for visitors.
