Organ donation is a great humanitarian act that gives a new lease of life to many people, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay said on Wednesday.
September 23 is observed as Tamil Nadu Organ Donation Day every year to create awareness about the importance of organ donation and to commemorate the organ donation of Hithendran, a 15-year-old boy who was declared brain-dead after a road accident in September 2008.
In a message marking the occasion, Chief Minister Vijay said the day was observed to highlight the importance of organ donation and remember Hithendran, whose organs were donated after his death.
He said organ donation enables a person to help several others even after death by giving them a chance at a new life. Every organ donated to patients awaiting transplant offers new hope and an opportunity for a fresh start, he said.
Vijay also called for remembering with pride all organ donors who have helped guide others towards a new lease of life through their humanitarian gesture.
