Details of the petition submitted by more than 200 people led by K.R. Krishnamurthy and Govindaraj, functionaries of the Workers’ Rights Movement to the Collector: Rs. 12,792 per month should be paid as wages to sanitation workers working under all levels of local bodies, and Rs. 14,792 to those operating overhead water tanks as per government order. If sanitation workers working in local governments work continuously for 2 years or 480 days, they should be made permanent. Contractual, private and lump sum payment systems should be abolished.
Waste disposal and sanitation work should be mechanized. The sanitation workers should be provided with gloves, shoes, other protective equipment, medical care, toilets, restrooms, drinking water, and leave facilities. The workers should be provided with ventilated apartments, free education and alternative government jobs for the descendants of all types of workers involved in sanitation work in the local government sector. If these demands are not met, the workers will go on an indefinite strike from December 2, they said.
