In a major drug bust, Railway Police arrested a youth from Pollachi after seizing 8.2 kilograms of ganja from an express train at the Coimbatore Railway Station on Wednesday.
With the festive rush ahead of Diwali, authorities have stepped up surveillance at railway stations to curb the smuggling of narcotics. During a joint inspection by the Railway Police and the Narcotics Control Unit, officers searched the Shalimar–Thiruvananthapuram Express and discovered a suspicious bag near the front section of the general compartment. Upon examination, the bag was found to contain ganja packed in multiple bundles.
The individual in possession of the contraband was detained and taken to the Railway Police Station for questioning. He was later identified as Sabarinath, a resident of Pollachi. The seized narcotic substance weighed approximately 8.2 kilograms.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accused was attempting to smuggle the ganja into Kerala by exploiting the increased movement of passengers during the festive season.
The arrest has created a stir at the busy railway junction, prompting authorities to tighten security checks on all long-distance trains passing through Coimbatore. The police have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and launched a full-scale investigation to trace the origin of the consignment and the network involved in the smuggling operation.
