Ponneri VAO death takes sharp turn

The death of a 27-year-old woman Village Administrative Officer in Ponneri has taken a dramatic turn after a fellow VAO lodged a complaint alleging that the circumstances surrounding her death were suspicious, prompting police to intensify their investigation.
Aruna, a native of Agaram village near Ponneri in Tiruvallur district, was serving as the Village Administrative Officer of Keerappakkam village in Ponneri taluk. On December 29, she was admitted to the Government Stanley Hospital in Chennai by her parents following a domestic issue.
According to preliminary information, Aruna’s mother Jyoti had reprimanded her over household matters, after which Aruna’s condition reportedly worsened. Despite medical treatment, she died two days later. Based on initial findings, police treated the case as a suspected suicide.
The Thiruppalaivanam police registered a case and began inquiries. However, the case took an unexpected turn when Sivabharathi, another Village Administrative Officer working in Ponneri taluk, submitted a complaint expressing doubts over Aruna’s death. In his complaint, Sivabharathi stated that he and Aruna had been working together as VAOs for the past two years and had developed a relationship that later led to plans for marriage. He said his parents had accepted the proposal.
He alleged that Aruna’s parents opposed the relationship as the couple belonged to different communities and had threatened both Aruna and his family. He further stated that these pressures raised serious suspicion regarding the circumstances of her death.
Police officials said the complaint has been taken seriously and all angles, including family issues and personal relationships, are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
