A nine-month pregnant tribal woman was carried nearly 8 km in a makeshift sling by her relatives to reach a health centre in Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitharama Raju district due to the lack of a motorable road.
Thamini, 27, wife of Mangaraju of Tadakapalli village, developed labour pains on Thursday. The nearest primary health centre was about 8 km from the village, but there was no proper road connecting the area.
The route involved crossing hilly terrain, forest stretches and small streams. Recent heavy rains had further worsened the pathways, making the journey even more difficult. With no vehicle access to the village, Thamini’s relatives seated her in a makeshift sling and carried her for nearly 8 km along the difficult mountain route.
After reaching Samagatta, she was taken by jeep to the regional hospital at Chintapalli, where she received immediate medical attention.Thamini subsequently delivered a baby girl. Doctors said both the mother and the newborn were in good health.
Residents of the area have urged the authorities to provide road connectivity and street lighting between their village and Samagatta to improve access to healthcare and other essential services.
