PSG Hospitals has successfully performed two awake craniotomy procedures to remove brain tumours in 2026, marking a milestone in advanced neurosurgical care in Coimbatore. The surgeries were carried out while preserving the patients’ critical speech, language and motor functions.
Both patients, aged 45 and 36, were diagnosed with low-grade gliomas in the left temporal region of the brain, close to areas controlling speech, language and movement.
The first patient, a 45-year-old woman, underwent surgery on January 2 after experiencing persistent headaches and vomiting. The second patient, a 36-year-old woman with a history of intermittent headaches, underwent the procedure on September 30.
During the operations, both patients remained conscious during critical stages and participated in neurological tests, including counting, repeating sentences, identifying objects and moving their limbs. Specialised brain mapping and electrical stimulation helped surgeons identify and preserve vital functional areas. Complete tumour removal was achieved in both cases.
The procedures were performed by the Neurosurgery team comprising Dr. K.S. Thirumurthy, Dr. Jayaprakash Duraisamy, Dr. Vinoth D. and Dr. Varshaa B., along with Consultant Neuroanaesthesiologist Dr. Aravind Ayyappan and Head of Anaesthesiology Dr. Prasanth Kumar MS.
A specialised sedate-awake-sedate anaesthesia technique and scalp nerve block ensured patient comfort during surgery.
Both patients retained normal speech and limb movements, resumed routine activities from the first postoperative day and were discharged in stable condition. Follow-up assessments have also indicated good functional recovery.
The achievement highlights the coordinated expertise of PSG Hospitals’ Neurosurgery and Neuroanaesthesia teams in treating complex brain tumours.
