The Department of Mathematics of PSGR Krishnammal College for Women organised the International Conference on Mathematical Sciences and Big Data in Interdisciplinary Research (ICMSBDIR–2026) from Feb. 26 to 28 in hybrid mode.
The three-day conference brought together eminent academicians, international delegates and researchers to discuss the expanding scope and societal relevance of Mathematics and Big Data. The event featured 12 technical sessions with 15 resource persons, 90 participants and 63 paper presentations.
N Yesodha Devi, Secretary of the institution, delivered the welcome address and highlighted the growing importance of Mathematics in fields such as climate science, data science and engineering.
P Kandaswamy, former Head of the Department of Mathematics at Bharathiar University, delivered the inaugural address. He emphasised the vital role of mathematical modelling and computational methods in areas such as weather forecasting, healthcare, defence and emerging technologies.
The keynote address was delivered by Maithili Sharan, Bhatnagar Awardee from the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He explained how mathematical models help address real-world challenges in atmospheric science, life sciences and industrial processes.
S Balachandran, former Additional Director General of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, spoke during the first technical session on early warning systems and the role of big data in weather forecasting.
The valedictory address was delivered by P Kolandaivel, former Vice-Chancellor of Periyar University, who emphasised the importance of strong mathematical foundations for advancements in fields such as artificial intelligence and data science.
Best paper presentation awards were presented in the student, research scholar and faculty categories. The conference concluded with a vote of thanks by R Lakshmi, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics.
