Actor and director Raghava Lawrence has sparked political speculation by indicating that circumstances have led him towards entering politics. His statement comes amid reports that he may contest the upcoming Tiruchirappalli East Assembly by-election on behalf of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Rumours regarding his possible candidature had been circulating widely in recent days. In response, Raghava Lawrence had earlier announced that he would make an important declaration on June 11.
However, following the demise of veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, he postponed the announcement by a day as a mark of respect.
In a message posted on his social media platform X, Raghava Lawrence said he had never imagined entering politics and had no ambition either to earn money through politics or to contest elections. He stated that his only intention had been to support a person he trusts and admires, believing that such an association would enable him to serve society on a much larger scale than he could as an individual.
He further said that circumstances had now brought him to a stage where entering politics had become necessary. According to him, a video to be released at 10 a.m. would explain his understanding of politics, how it entered his life, his mother’s perspective on public service, and several important incidents that shaped his journey.
Seeking the blessings, advice and guidance of the public, Raghava Lawrence said he was taking an important step in his life and hoped people would watch the video in full and share their views.
His remarks have intensified speculation about his future political role and possible association with electoral politics.
