Actor Rajinikanth on Monday honoured sanitation worker Padma by presenting her with a gold chain, lauding her integrity after she returned a bag containing a large quantity of gold jewellery to its rightful owner.
Padma (48), a sanitation worker from Pillaiyar Koil Street in Thiruvallikeni, was on duty in the Vandikkaran area of Thiruvallikeni on January 11 when she noticed a bag lying on the roadside. On checking, she found that it contained gold jewellery weighing about 45 sovereigns.
Demonstrating honesty, Padma immediately handed over the bag to the Pondy Bazaar police station. Subsequent investigation by the police revealed that the jewellery belonged to Paramesh (46), a resident of Nanganallur, who had reportedly misplaced it. The recovered jewellery was later returned to the owner after due verification.
Padma’s act of integrity drew widespread appreciation from the public and authorities alike. On learning about the incident, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin personally appreciated her honesty and presented her with a cheque for Rs. 1 lakh in recognition of her exemplary conduct. Actor Rajinikanth also acknowledged Padma’s honesty and honoured her with a gold chain, stating that her action set an inspiring example for society. The gesture has been widely welcomed as a fitting recognition of integrity and civic responsibility among sanitation workers.
